My name is Sylvia N’Golet. The 2021-2022 school year will be my 32th year working in education and mark the beginning of my 22nd year working for Norfolk Public Schools. I have been teaching long enough to have seen so many advances in the use of technologies in the classroom. When I first started working for NPS, email was the new way in which we were to correspond with other educators in the district. The use of lesson plan books was no longer acceptable. All lesson plans were now to be word processed and submitted by email. Classrooms were being outfitted with at least 3 to 4 desktop computers and libraries were being called media centers because students used computers to conduct their research. The biggest change came with the use of interactive whiteboards, electronic gradebooks, and learning management systems. The pace at which technology has changed the way I have taught over the past 10 years has been mindboggling. Even more mindboggling, are the changes that I have had to make in the way I teach since the start of virtual remote teaching. While many students have struggled making this change, I felt I have given my students my best instruction ever in my teaching career. I would like to share with my fellow colleagues the successes that I have had while teaching in a virtual environment and how I hope to apply some of these skills to my instruction when we return to teaching in-person.
