Building and Editing Virtual Escape Rooms with Google Forms
Limited Capacity seats available

Are you ready to present your students a fun out of the box activity? Are you ready to give your students an interactive engaging assignment they can do asynchronously? Do you want to do it for free? Do you want it to grade itself? Could use a customizable activity suitable for all grades and contents?

Then look no further than virtual escape rooms!

Escape rooms are great tools for review, remediation, or differentiation, because they have the students practicing the same types of questions you would put on a worksheet, but with a puzzle element to boost engagement. With the use of Google forms, in or out of the classroom students will get the practice you need from them and the non-academic challenges they enjoy.

This session will:
1) Demonstrate different themes and puzzles you can use for your escape rooms,
2) Show how to create forms to be used in escape rooms,
3) Cover and model the steps of linking the forms to your created room,
4) Teach how you can copy or edit a room to fit your needs,
5) Explain how to introduce escape rooms and their instructions to your students; and
6) Provide examples of how to increase or decrease the difficulty of virtual escape rooms.

Come learn how to make engaging, enriching activities that the kids call, "really fun!"

Limited Capacity seats available

With Wizer, teachers can create digital worksheets by using different types of questions, incorporating images and videos, and even recording directions. Teachers can ask students to label images, categorize information, respond to open-ended and multiple-choice questions, or respond to video content. Flip the classroom by following videos with open response questions to be discussed in class. Create cloze reading passages to assess reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. Go paperless (finally!) while still giving students practice labeling organ systems on the human body or countries on a world map. Ask students to sort anything from polygons to parts of speech, or teach younger students social studies concepts by having them draw a picture of their community.

If possible, please have a library card and four digit PIN with you for the session. Engaging Students through Choice Boards Powered by Google Apps
Limited Capacity seats available

In a world of virtual learning, student engagement has been more difficult than in person learning. As a result, educators have had to get more creative in the implementation of their resources. A resource that we have had access to all along is Google app. When coupled with a choice board, it is an amazing tool.

The use of choice gives students a voice while still showcasing what they have learned. Google Apps are vast and have the ability to serve any purpose that you desire. In this session participants will learn how Google Apps can be incorporated into their classrooms and how choice boards can better serve them and their students in order to increase student engagement and student choice. Teachers will be able to begin to create a choice board to use in their classroom.

The World Is My Audience - Engaging Struggling Students
Limited Capacity seats available

I struggled with getting my students to invest time and effort in creative writing. I tried hundreds of journal prompts and writing activities but nothing worked. Then, a simple idea had a profound impact on my classroom.

I realized that students are significantly more motivated when they know the content they create will reach a global audience. Rather than create a piece of homework for the teacher to mark and maybe sit on the fridge at home, they were authoring media-rich digital books for the world to see!

In this engaging and interactive session, you will hear Jon’s story and learn about how publishing had a transformative effect on the engagement of his students and the quality of their work. You will also learn Book Creator’s features, discuss how it can create a student-centered environment in your classroom and write/publish a collaborative book together.

One of the best ways to get students to pay attention to online learning is to include highly engaging techniques that encourage students to think critically, creatively, and collaboratively. You will be excited when you walk away from this session with techniques you can use tomorrow with your students.

Evil Alien Penguin and the best school year ever
Limited Capacity seats available

My 3rd grade students were struggling to connect many of the core concepts from the curriculum. By using an Apple Pencil and the screen share feature, we stumbled onto a character called the "Evil Alien Penguin" that would constantly be trying to defeat the class, comic-book style.

The students were suddenly engaged in all topics. They created superhero alter-egos for themselves. They had to chase the penguin around the globe, and then through time (visiting Ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, etc). The penguin would come up with different adaptations to each climate or would travel to Ancient China so he could use fireworks as a weapon.

The session would detail how to guide a class to creating its own story, how to use basic functions of a tablet to create characters, and how to incorporate backdrops relevant to each subject and/or content section.

One additional area of focus will be allowing the students to answer questions as their "avatars." I found this to be extremely valuable in math especially, as students were much more willing to take risks and guesses and work their way through a series of unknown steps. They were able to separate their social fears because the burden of public "failure" was put on the shoulders of their character, not on them. One student went from zero participation to full participation, as long as the picture of his laser-eyed bear was drawn onto the PowerPoint slide.
